When we asked women what they'd like to see come out of the research being done for D-MER, 68% answered: increased awareness, more information available about D-MER and wider recognition of the condition. Here is how you can
help make that happen.
These suggestions can all be done nearly 100%
anonymously, in the sense you don't have to admit you yourself suffer/suffered with
D-MER. This is an important thing as some mothers are still so insecure about
sharing that they experienced D-MER. However awareness is what is needed so that the "next generation"
of mothers with D-MER do not have the same kind of insecurity about their
experience. This is the only way D-MER is going to be become more widely talked
about.
10 Things YOU can do to make D-MER more widely talked about, to raise awareness and to educate others.
1.) Write about D-MER in your blog. Here is a sample
entry. Personalize it, change it up if you want and spread the word!
2.) Post about D-MER in your favorite parenting or
breastfeeding forum. Here is a sample post. Feel free to use it as it or change it up. But post to your hearts content! Some of the forums that could still use some extra awareness are Kellymom.com and Breastfeeding.com. LLLI forums could use some positive awareness of D-MER, lots of moms talk about the phenomenon itself, but not about D-MER in particular. Mothering.com forums have D-MER thread coming out their ears, but the ABA could use a few more. Of course there are smaller as well as locally based groups that don't get any attention, that should!
3.) Print out one informational sheet about D-MER and
"accidentally" leave it out on the coffee table at your OB's or
pediatrician's office.
4.) Mail D-MER information sheets to all the midwives and
IBCLCs in your area. Here is a sample letter -coming soon-
5.) Take informational handouts to your mothers group/LLL
meeting to either have the leader pass out (anonymously) or to hand out
yourself and start a dialog.
8.) Email breastfeeding professionals that put out
publications about breastfeeding for mothers. Below is some contact
information for some to start with, and here is a sample
letter. Tweak it to make it personal and then send it off! Dr. Jack Newman: drjacknewman@sympatico.ca Kelly Bonyata of kellymom.com: kelly@kellymom.com Dr. Sears: DrSears@AskDrSears.com Sheila Kitzinger tess@sheilakitzinger.com
9.) Display awarness items, on your car, as a t-shirt, or in your home. The mark up on items is minimal, but any profits received go to offset the costs of d-mer.org internet presence.
10.) Put something in you signature, in emails or on message forums, that direct people to the d-mer.org website. Here are some examples, personalize them or change them up if you want!
